Amy heads to Japan as Youth Exchange Student

The Rotary Club of Glen Eira was serenaded by our outgoing Youth Exchange Student Amy Krasey. Amy is leaving for Japan for 12 months as part of Rotary's Youth Exchange program. She will go to school in Japan, live with Japanese families and be hosted by Japanese Rotarians.

To mark her farewell, Amy played her guitar and sung for our club at our weekly meeting. She is a fine talent and we are delighted to be sending her as a representative of us, our District, and of Australia. Follow the links to watch the video of her "Perfect" singing.

New Rotary Theme 2012-13: Peace Through Service

RI President-elect Sakuji Tanaka will ask Rotarians to build Peace Through Service in 2012-13.

Tanaka unveiled the RI theme during the opening plenary session of the 2012 International Assembly, a training event for incoming Rotary district governors.

"Peace, in all of the ways that we can understand it, is a real goal and a realistic goal for Rotary," he said. "Peace is not something that can only be achieved through agreements, by governments, or through heroic struggles. It is something that we can find and that we can achieve, every day and in many simple ways."

The Rotary Club of Glen Eira's President-Elect for 2012-13 is Dr Mark Preston.

Successful Japanese Cultural Afternoon!

"What a great day, I feel very proud to be a Rotarian and a member of such a great club," remarked Past President and Paul Harris Fellow John Strong.

From a small seed sown by Yoshiko Stynes, nurtured by the club, and flowering in the splendour of today's event, our club was extremely proud to host our Japanese Cultural Afternoon at the Glen Eira Town Hall. The event was a financial success, enabling us to make a further substantial donation to the Japanese Tsunami appeal.

With hundreds attending to watch the spectacular dancing, singing, drumming and other Japanese performers, this was a celebration for families to enjoy. In the presence of Mayor of the City of Glen Eira, Margaret Esakoff, the state Member for Caulfield, David Southwick MP, the event was officially opened by the Consul-General of Japan, Mr Hidenobu Sobashima and Mrs Sobashima.

There were many highlights of the day where the room was filled with kimonos. The Japanese honey cakes were delicious, the origami Ori-Roos were a hit, the Ikebana floral displays were beautiful, and everyone had the opportunity to try their own Japanese calligraphy.

Given our club's close association with Japan - our sister club is the Rotary Club of Ogaki West and our current youth exchange student China comes from Japan - it was a spectacular and enjoyable occasion, allowing Rotarians and the local community to build goodwill and better friendships.

Fashionista Fundraising!

A fantastic fashion fundraiser was organised by Joyce & Sim Binstock at Blue Illusion, Malvern. With over 30 people attending, including some very stylish models (Rotarians, spouses & friends!), we were delighted that Manager of Blue Illusion, Ester, donated 20% of all sales to the Rotary Foundation. This was in addition to over $300 collected as the door entry.

President Garry bravely attended the whole event, ably participated by his gorgeous family. We were under no illusion about his fashion sense!

Japan-Australia Cultural Afternoon

In association with the City of Glen Eira, The Rotary Club of Glen Eira is organising a special “Japanese Afternoon” for the citizens of Melbourne to experience traditional Japanese culture.

Glen Eira Rotary holds its meeting at the Victorian State Parliament

We met in the foyer of Parliament house at 7.00pm, by the Member for Caulfield, David Southwick. He has been the Liberal member for just one year, but this has capped a long link with himself and his family involving community service in many ways.

After a short introduction, David led us into a private dining room, where we had a very pleasant dinner, accompanied by wines. The wines were provided as a gesture by David himself.

Our Club members were treated to a short speech from David Southwick and a reply of thanks from our Club President, Garry Fabian. We were then escorted around a number of important and historical areas of the Parliament, which David explained had been added to and modified over the years, resulting even today in a shortage of adequate facilities.

Members were able to see the 2 chambers of the Parliament whilst they were both actually sitting. We also visited the library, and Hansard offices. Whilst the whole Parliament building is an architectural gem, with many imposing features, there are even more elaborate and rich decorations to be found in the 2 chambers, the Library, and several grand foyers.

Tour of ABC Studios

Highly interesting visit by ten of our members and a couple of friends to the A.B.C. building at Southbank on Thursday.

We were shown the workings of our daily 8c of a most efficient organisation. Our guide Michael Taft, a volunteer, who had worked for over thirty years at the A.B.C. was most knowledgeable, instructive, entertaining and gave us an insight into the National Broadcaster.

We watched Jon Faine doing his morning broadcast, we saw the television studio from which many shows emanate, e.g. the news, weather, Stateline, Insiders etc. and several other radio studios as well. Sixteen radio stations broadcast from here at various times of the day and night. These broadcasts include Radio National, Triple J and the overseas network which targets mainly our near Asian and Pacific countries. These broadcasts go out in nine different languages. The tour concluded after an hour and a half.

Youth Exchange - the Good, The Not So Good & The Beautiful

It was a night of Japanese culture as we were treated by Kazuyo Preston and China on their experience of being a youth exchange student.

China was first to address the club, showing us images of where she lives in Japan. She discussed her life and culture in Japan and was amazed at how Australian students do not write as much notes at school as the Japanese counterparts. At her school in Japan, she has 20 classes in her year level, each with over 40 students.

China was also quick to point out that she does not like Vegemite or licorice.

Kazuyo ‘Kaz’ Preston, is the wife of President Elect Mark Preston. Kaz first arrived in Australia many years ago as a youth exchange student.

Kaz explained the four D’s of youth exchange. No Dating, No Drinking, No Drugs No Disappearing. (Apparently there is now a 5th D: No Downloading!)

It appears that the one of the D’s was ignored as she started to see Mark. (dating - ed) These days Kaz is actively involved in her passion of world peace. With other Japanese woman she started Japanese for Peace (http://jfp.org.au/). Each year they hold The Japanese for Peace concert with Rod Quantoc as MC.

Youth of the Year Award Winner

The Rotary Club of Glen Eira celebrated Rotary's New Generations Month with its annual Youth Dinner and Youth of the Year Award presentation. The high calibre finalists were as follows:

Kelila Slonim (Leibler Yavneh College)
Jennifer Gong (Kilvington Grammar)
Nicole Geschke (McKinnon Secondary College)
Annie Zeleznikow (Leibler Yavneh College)

This year's winner is Jennifer Gong. Jennifer is a Year 11 student at Kilvington Grammar. Her motto is “what you put in is what you get back”.

She has always been interested in community service and has been involved her in 40 hour famine, Jump Rope for Heart and Make a Wish Foundation.

Her working part time at a pharmacy led to an interest in helping and caring for disadvantaged people, whether it is due to a disability or old age, this led to her involvement in the Adopt a Pensioner program.

As Jennifer says “it’s not only helping other people, but moving out of my comfort zone to show charity towards others and wanting to enhance the community environment”. As the winner of the Award, her school Kilvington Grammar receives $500 and her chosen charity also receives $500. Her chosen charity is “The Adopt-a-Pensioner Program”.

Working Bee at DIK in September

Our club is once again having a Working Bee at the Donations in Kind store to help pack and load donated items to families in need across the globe.

Donations in Kind (DIK) is a program supported by Rotary Clubs in Australia which grew out of the compassion and concern of returning overseas volunteers.

Many goods and products, for which organisations in Australia have no further use, are valuable commodities in needy countries. While 50 computers with non-flat screen monitors and less than 1 gigabyte of memory may be obsolete for some corporate offices, they might instead be of significant value in helping the education of underpriveleged students in East Timorese universities or in assisting with the accountancy of microfinance finance projects in Africa.

The program involves the collection, sorting, packing, dispatch and distribution of donated items to countries in need of these goods.

Our Rotarians will have a working bee at the DIK store, Rear Woolshed 40, 400 Somerville Road, West Footscray pm Tuesday 27th September. We will meet there at 10am and work until about 3pm. Bring your own lunch, tea and coffee provided. If you wish to volunteer on the day, please contact our club.

Our 2009 Finalists

Next week is the Rotary Club of Glen Eira's annual New Generations Night where we celebrate the great things achieved and done by the youth of today. We host the finalists and present our Youth of the Year Award with their families and teachers attending.

In 2005, we introduced the Club's Youth of the Year Award. The award is presented to a young person in the City of Glen Eira (under 18) who demonstrates the Rotary ideals of "Service Above Self". Local schools nominate potential applicants who are then interviewed by our esteemed panel.

Previous winners include Chloe Greaves, Liam McAuliffe, Jillian Beale, Danae Lekakis, Elaura Carter and Angelo Ngo.

Business Person's Breakfast with the Governor of Victoria

The Honorable Alex Chernov, AO, QC, was the speaker at Glen Eira Rotary Club’s Business Breakfast this week.

Governor Chernov spoke about “The Power of One” and how one person’s inner strength could lead to great benefits for society.

As an example, he spoke of Dr Kiran Martin, a pae- diatrician, who is the founder and director of Asha, an NGO working to improve the health, living conditions and prospects of slum dwellers in Delhi. Dr Martin founded Asha in 1988 to tackle the numerous problems faced by Delhi’s slum dwellers. Under her leadership, Asha has spent more than 20 years working in partner- ship with slum communities, providing an ever expand- ing range of benefits and opportunities which enable people to help themselves.

Today Asha works in the areas of healthcare, community empowerment, financial inclusion, education and envi- ronmental improvements which benefits about 350,000 people in nearly 50 slum colonies.

Asha’s highly successful model of slum development has been recognised at the highest levels, influenc- ing government policies both in Delhi and nationwide. In 2002 the President of India awarded Dr Martin the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian awards. Governor Chernov praised Rotary’s partnerships for improving the welfare of the community.

The breakfast raised over $5000 for Australian Rotary Health, and attendees were thanked by Glen Eira President Jan Hill.

DGE Keith Ryall looks forward to closer links with In- dia in the next Rotary year, through both RI PE Kalyan Banerjee and also the 2012 GSE program to D3030 and Central India.

The Angel who was accidentally born on earth

Our club opened its eyes to living with autism when Miwa Stynes spoke at our weekly meeting. Miwa, daughter of Rotarian Yoshiko, has two young children David and Tomi who have both been diagnosed with autism. Her story moved us all.

Autism is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behaviour. Today it is also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The way people think about autism has changed in recent years. It is best described as a group of disorders with a similar pattern of behaviour in three key areas - communication, social interaction and imaginative thought. The currently favoured term is Autism Spectrum Disorder, with the word 'spectrum' used because no two people with an Autism Spectrum Disorder are exactly alike.

Miwa told us her very personal story of how her life changed forever and her daily challenges.

With the illustrations of Handa Toshi, Miwa wrote a book about her son David called "The Angel Who Was Accidentally Born On Earth". (click on video below to watch)

Youth Exchange update from Finland

News from our Youth Exchange student in Finland, Kim Konisberry:

Easter was very busy here.

Easter is celebrated much more here, there are decorations everywhere and from Good Friday onwards, you eat. That's seriously all you do!

They have this amazing egg sauce/curry that you eat with potatoes as an easter tradition and this amazing fruit pudding type desert. And of course chocolate.

But there's a catch. We didn't get given easter eggs (yes, it's pretty upsetting I can tell you right now. I missed my humpdy dumpdy and easter bunny). We had to go out and get them in this bizzar Finnish tradition. Only children are allowed to do it, but being an exchange student, I counted as one of them, luckily!

You had to dress up as a witch and go door to door reciting a finnish poem, wishing the occupant good health for the future and then in exchange for a decorated birch branch (they took ages to make and I only made 20, for me and my little sister to share) they give you either candy or a little egg. No, they don't have big eggs. Their normal sized eggs are the size of an actual egg and are very expensive! Like three euro!

So that was a little dissapointing. But my little host sister and I had fun doing it.

When I got back, I shared my chocolate with my two older host brothers (12 and 15) because they were too old to go. They were very grateful!

On the first of May we celebrated Vappu. It is very similar labor day. That was a good day! My rotary club here invited me to be on their team of four in the local Vappu compeitions! I dressed up as an Australian princess, even though no one else wore anything special. It gave all the locals a good laugh anyway. We had to throw a ball into a bucket, do mini golf and shoot the target. I got no points for my team, although it didn't matter because we all had heaps of fun. Our team came second to Jalasjarvi rotary club's arch enemy; The Lions. (A volleyball team). That day we ate heaps too. The Finnish know how to celebrate!

The next weekend (mothers day) my Australian friend travelled to my town to visit me. She actually lives in Bonbeach, 10 minutes from me in Australia and is being sponsored by Chelsea Rotary. We've become really close.

My host brother and I purchased my host mum a stylish garden bucket and planted roses in it (he suggested a box of chocolates and I disagreed. How typical is that? My host mum is in love with her garden and it is absolutly gorgeous, so I wanted to add something to it).

Me and Maygen (Aussie friend) did some karaoke in typical Aussie style, screaming into spoons watching the words appear on tv. It was great. We also pigged out on my supply of Aussie tim tams and her easter chocolate I bought her. (we bought each other easter eggs because we didn't get any from our host families annd she didn't go virvon varvon).

We also baked a really nice two layer cake for mothers day. It was decoreated with berries and whipped cream and looked like one from a cake shop! In the morning I got up early with y host dad and made a cheese platter as well. My host mum was so delighted and said it was the best mothers day ever! She told my host dad his cake better be as good next year and he looked scared :P

After that weekend, I went to a district conference which was so good to get together with my fellow exchange friends and we went on a tour of lake lappajarvi (apparently created by a volcano). We also had to give a small speech in Finnish to around 250 rotarians. I didn't do too well, because I was so nervous! I knew all the words but kind of froze. But it's good practice so I didn't mind too much.

This weekend I had two school dances (like prom). One in my home town, and one in the town over where my host cousin lives. (I've become really close to her, her sister and family. I visit them frequently). The dance is for 9th graders only (15 and 16 year olds) so I felt very special to be allowed to go. All the other exchange students are mostly over 16 and don't get to go to the younger school.
My town's dance was better because it was smaller and less formal. There was around 70 kids there. i danced with a lot of people (waltz, tango and a Finnish tradiitonal dance My host brother taught me the night before!!). It was really good. we were made to dance with people until half time. I couldn't dance one dance and neither could my partner, so we made up our own dance. It was one of the best times I've had in a while. Really relaxing and very Australian!

The next dance was in the bigger town. there was way mor epoeple and it was very very formal and people wern't really as relaxed. I made the most out of it and even though the dance floor was empty, did some rock 'n' roll dancing which made more people relax and join me. The bigger town had a day though, where everyone dresses up (9th grade is the last grade of middle school) it was like muck-up day except you couldn't throw eggs or anything at anyone, only dress up. so I got to do that tooo! Massive fun!!!

This month I also went to play golf with my Rotary club which was fun. They are all happy people to that was great.

Murrumbeena Community Market

With help and support from the Rotary Club of Caulfield, we had busy and enjoyable day at the Murrumbeena Community market raising nearly $1000 for survivors of the Japanese Earthquake & Tsunami.

With nearly 25 volunteers, we taught people how to make Origami Cranes and also sold a number of Japanese gifts that were kindly donated.

The Honourable Alex Chernov, AO, QC GOVERNOR OF VICTORIA

Alex Chernov was born in Lithuania and, with his Russian parents, immigrated to Australia as a young boy. He was educated at Melbourne High School and then at the University of Melbourne where he gained the degrees of B.Com. and LLB (Hons). After graduating, he tutored in law on a part-time basis at Ormond and Newman Colleges and at Monash University. In 1968, Alex Chernov signed the Roll of Counsel at the Victorian Bar and in 1980, was appointed Queens Counsel in Victoria and, later, in the majority of the States in Australia. He practised almost exclusively in commercial and company law and equity, appearing in the Supreme Courts of nearly all the States at trial and appellate level, as well as the Supreme Court of Fiji and the High Court of Australia and the Privy Council.

Whilst a barrister, Alex Chernov played a significant role in the leadership of the legal profession and legal education in Australia and in our region. Between 1971 and 1975, he was the Independent Lecturer in Equity for the Council of Legal Education and, between 1985 and 1987, was an Honorary Consultant to the Australian Law Reform Commission. He is the co-author of Brooking and Chernov, Tenancy Law and Practice in Victoria, and the editor of its second edition. During 1985 and 1986, he was the Chairman of the Victorian Bar and Vice President of the Australian Bar Association. Between 1990 and 1991, he was President of the Australian Law Council and was Vice President of LawAsia between 1995 and 1997. He was also a member of the Council of the Presbyterian Ladies College between 1981 and 1990 and Chairman of the Australian Motor Sport Court of Appeal between 1985 and 1997.
In 1997, Alex Chernov was appointed a Judge of the Trial Division of the Supreme Court of Victoria and, in 1998, was appointed to its Court of Appeal. In 1992, he became a member of the Council of the University of Melbourne and chaired a number of its major committees. In 2004, he was elected a Deputy Chancellor of the University of Melbourne and in 2009, was elected as its Chancellor. In 2008, Alex Chernov was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia. Alex Chernov was sworn in as the 28th Governor of Victoria on 8th April 2011.
Alex and his wife, Elizabeth, who is also Law graduate of the University, have three children, who are also graduates of the University. They have six grandchildren.

Japan Disaster Recovery

Having such a long and close association with Japan, our club and members have been deeply saddened by the recent natural disaster in Japan. We have been monitoring the situation closely how to help.
In the short term, Rotarian Yoshiko Stynes is teaching our club members how to make Origami Paper Cranes. The crane is a symbol of peace, and we will make them in the traditional Japanese style. The paper crane are then available for purchase as a fundraiser, where the funds will go towards the Rotary Japan 2011 Disaster Recovery Fund, set up by Rotary International.

We plan to take these cranes out into all parts of the community, including local schools. Anyone who is interested in participating, please contact our club.

Rotary Japan 2011 Disaster Recovery Fund

In response to the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck off the coast of Japan on 11 March, the Board of Trustees of The Rotary Foundation has established the Rotary Japan 2011 Disaster Recovery Fund. All contributions will support long-term recovery projects carried out in the affected areas. The Trustees will manage the fund.

GSE Team visit from Texas

A group of young professionals from Rotary District 5840 near San Antonio, Texas visited our club last Tuesday for a rousing night of song, fun and information.

Led by Rotarian John Dierksen, this Group Study Exchange (GSE) Team included Miles Earwood, a sergeant with the San Antonio Police, John Buol, a firearms instructor and Army Reservist, Michelle Martinez, a PR executive with a San Antonio Transportation company, and Michelle Martinez, a manager with a water utilities firm.

The team gave us a valuable insight into life and work in Texas. They also led a great rendition of "Deep in the Heart of Texas" and we taught them "I'd love to have a beer with Duncan" and "A pub with no beer".

The GSE Team is in Rotary District 9800 for a period of one month, experiencing vocational days related to their employment and also enjoying the sights and sounds of Melbourne and Victoria. Next week they present at the District Conference in Adelaide before travelling to Echuca and Bendigo.

How Youth Exchange influenced a life

I know its been quite some time since we last spoke, I'm Gabi McMullen, and I was sponsered by the Glen Eira Rotary Club to go on exchange to Saxony, Germany in 2008.

I just wanted to thank both yourself and the club once more for all the kindness you have shown me, truely the experience offered by Rotary changed my life.

Last year I was able to graduate high school with an ATER of 94.8 and currently I am studying International Relations at the Australian National University.

Ambassadorial Scholar - Sharmila Acharya

My name is Sharmila Acharya and I am very fortunate to be the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar from Rotary District 5360 (Rotary Club of Lethbridge Sunrise). I graduated from the University of Calgary with a Chemical Engineering Undergraduate degree in 2006, but am now following a different path in the Environmental Engineering area, specifically Water and Wastewater Treatment. I am here in Melbourne to pursue my Masters of Environmental Engineering with a focus on Water Resources at the University of Melbourne.

My interest in the Rotary Foundation came from its commitment to the community and instilling goodwill to the global environment. I feel that my vision is aligned with Rotary's vision as I have ben an active member of the Southern Alberta community from a young age. My most notable Ambassadorial Scholars commitments include: The Alberta Water Works Association, Green Calgary, United Way, and Toastmasters International. I have used my status as an East Indian Classical dancer to help out many non-profit organizations and support many charitable functions for 5 years. Thank you Rotary for giving me this opportunity to continue doing what I love to do.

Sharmila is hosted by our club, the Rotary Club of Glen Eira. We wish her well in her 12 months with us.

Baby Materials for East Timor

Materials required include

Also rolls of Terry Towelling,baby soap, powder, toothpaste, brushes.

Goods are sent to the Alola Foundation run by Kirsty Sword Gusmao wife of the Prime Minister. Kirsty says:

"One reason that the infant and maternal mortality rates are so high is because expectant mothers are ashamed they have no gear for their newborn, so they do not go to hospital or the clinics for birth assistance".

In support of those affected by the recent floods across Australia, our club is doing its best to help those left behind with the recovery effort. The City of Glen Eira has given us approval to collect for the Rotary District 9800 Australian Flood Disaster Appeal.

We will be collecting on the following dates at the following locations:

Drawing upon our on-the-ground experience gained during the Victorian Bushfires, it is important for us to be reminded that we are not a first-line response agency – we can’t fix the problem, but we are well placed to support the recovering community and provide required assistance when the time comes for us to play our hands-on role. This Rotary does best. It helps build communities into the future and restores community spirit and goodwill.

Youth Exchange student returns from France

Our Club fired up the BBQ at the Glen Eira College voting booth for this year's State Election. We were visited by Rotarian David Southwick who has now won the seat of Caulfield as the Liberal Party candidate.

The testing weather challenged our members, but Geoff Asher corralled the troops, including our newest young prospective member (see sausage below)! Thank you to the College for letting us use the site once again, plus Cashmore Meats for the great sausages.

On display was a Disaster Aid Australia kit. We plan to raise money for many of those across Glen Eira throughout the year. We also sold tickets for the annual Christmas Raffle of the Rotary Club of Chadstone/East Malvern. First prize is a trailer load of goods valued at $4,500. If you want tickets, contact our club!

Melina wins inaugural Presidential Award

Last weekend, President Jan Hill and New Generations Chair Jeff Nirens visited the Royal Children's Hospital to present Melina Karina with the inaugural Presidential Award for her courage and determination, together with a cheque for $100 for art materials.

Melina was one of 4 finalists in the Rotary Club Of Glen Eira Youth Award and a Year 12 student at Glen Eira Secondary College.

Melina has been involved in a number of community projects focusing on cancer and mental health. She won second place in the Glen Eira Youth Expo Award. Melina received a scholarship from the Red Kite Scholarship when she won second place. She used these funds to assist her with her photographic and art work whereby she has a passion to help others through art therapy, especially those with cancer and mental health issues.

Melina, who has been in remission for six years, is now back in hospital with the onset of leukemia once again. She has been in hospital for one month receiving treatment and will be there for an extended period of time.

Her passion is to help others to move forward during their illnesses, as she helped herself mainly through her art therapy. Melina has a particular interest in the Arts and how art can be used as a form of therapy. Melina hopes to start an art therapy course at university.

Backs to the Future

Physio to the Stars Jan Hill presented a workshop to our club members and friends on "Backs to the Future - prevention versus cure", teaching us about the best way to use your back and preventing injury.

We learnt about posture, lifting techniques and learnt many exercises to help us in our everyday life. For our club members, this will assist us with many of our hands-on community projects and to ensure that we have healthy backs for years to come. It was great to hear this from the mouth of an expert in her field.

Donating school furniture to East Timor

With help from club members, a furniture truck, and two campuses of Melbourne's Wesley College, we have today collected some valuable school furniture (including desks and chairs). They will then be loaded onto a container tomorrow destined for needy schools in East Timor.

Due to the generosity of Wesley College, our members loaded the furniture at the Glen Waverley and Prahran campuses and took them to our Donations In Kind (DIK) store in West Footscray, ready for shipment. The furniture is in good condition and will be much appreciated by our northern neighbours.

Angela Ngo wins Youth of the Year

Putting others first has paid off for 18-year old Angela Ngo. The year 12 Kilvington Girls' Grammar student won this year's Glen Eira Rotary Youth Award at our Club's Annual Youth Night for her social service work.

Since Angela was nominated as social services captain this year, she has co-ordinated numerous fundraising events, collecting nearly $10,000 for Australian and overseas charities. They include $1050 for Haiti earthquake victims through World Vision and $5700 during the Wold Vision 40 Hour Famine.

And it's all on top of school work!

"It's quite a big juggle," Angela said. "But you get a lot out of it. You're not only able to help other people but you're getting out of your own comfort zone. I've always been interested in helping others ... in helping out the wider community and not living like a little perfect little girl and doing nothing."

All Glen Eira secondary schools had the opportunity to nominate a student for the award. Angela won a $500 prize to give to the charity of her choice, likely to be the Pakistan flood victims, and another $500 for her school to use as a scholarship.

Angela hopes to get into Melbourne University next year to study Commerce.

Canyon Lake - Building Communities, Bridging Continents

This Rotary year, all Rotary Clubs in District 9800 are pairing with a Rotary Club in District 5840 in Texas, USA. Our club is paired with the Rotary Club of Canyon Lake.

Dear President Phil Frank,

It is exciting that our respective District Governors Iven Mackay District D9800 and Stephanie Macchia D5840 have agreed to match up clubs in each of our Districts this year. In doing so, this will link our respective clubs and Countries and align us with the RI Theme ‘Building Communities and Bridging Continent’.

Our clubs are matched according to the sizes of our clubs but no doubt there are unique differences between our clubs. Thus, I would like to give you a brief outline of our club as initial introduction.

Our club was chartered in 1987, 23 years ago and has 4 original members. We are located in an affluent area of Melbourne, Victoria,

. The name Glen Eira is the same as that of the local council which supports a multi - cultural population consisting of Central & Eastern European Jewish, Italian, Greek, Polish, Asian Chinese, Japanese, Malaysian, and many others from diverse backgrounds.

Currently, our club has 20 active members, 3 female and 17 males, average age of 60 years, and 4 honorary male members. This August, we introduced 5 Friends of Rotary, made up of people who have either been past members or great club supporters and we plan to build on this number of Friends to assist us in completing our projects and join us with Fellowship activities throughout this Rotary year.

Our main event is our Business Persons Breakfast which showcases a speaker of respected business acumen for the local business men and women. The money raised is directed to a charity or organization of repute that will impact on making a marked difference to peoples’ lives.

This year we are also planning a Sports night and a fundraising event to support Polio Plus for the first time as part of our Future Vision Foundation activity.

Community activities are directed to local hospitals, aged care facilities, research in health and many other causes such as supporting fire and flood victims of our rural areas, impoverishes farmers, cancer survivors and so on. We support other local and further afield Rotary clubs with their respective projects.

Our local youth are an extremely important target group. We work closely with our local schools to provide job interview practice, select an outstanding high school student of years 11 and 12 for a Youth of the Year Award and work with our youth to build a sense of community conscious and commitment for the future.

Our International activities are directed to tsumani, flood and earthquake affected areas such as Indonesia, India, Sri Lankan, Haiti etc, Timor Leste community, supporting schools with equipment such as computers and support our local Donations in Kind warehouse with packing goods and financial aid for shipping goods to countries in need.

Our club is a vibrant happy club with long term committed members but as is the challenge for all Rotary clubs throughout the world attracting younger members is our major focus.

I am particularly keen to acknowledge the work of the Rotary Club of Warrnambool as your City is also my birth place and hometown. My connection with Warrnambool is and will always be life long strong.

This letter coincides with my birth month and 2010 is a significant year for me. Therefore it is fitting that I send this letter of support to all your members and acknowledge the fantastic work you have done for the Local and International Communities over the last 80 plus years.

BBQ causes hung Parliament!

On Federal Election day, our intrepid members manned a BBQ at the election booth at Glen Eira College. To help with sustenance as people prepared to vote, or to reward them after voting from their local member, we sold a great number of BBQ sausages.

It was a great fellowship event for our members and friends, with a bit of fundraising on the side. It was also the first official event where our new Friends of the Rotary Club of Glen Eira were involved. Thank you to Glen Eira College for letting us have our BBQ there.

We officially have Friends!

A new history commenced at the Rotary Club of Glen Eira as we officially launched our Friends!

The idea behind our Friends program is to involve non-Rotarians in our club. We recognise that not everyone is able to commit to being a member of our club but still wish to support and help our good works. For that reason, we have started the official Friends of the Rotary Club of Glen Eira, a group of like-minded supporters of Rotary and our projects.

Consisting of individuals and businesses, our Friends assist in whatever way they can - helping to volunteer, providing resources for our projects, donating goods, attending our events, inviting their own friends along ...

President Jan congratulated our first group of friends, including Geoff & Pat Cashmore of Cashmore's Quality Meats (a major help with our fundraising BBQs), Alan Samuel and Past Rotarians Syd Travitz & Marilyn Faiman. With other Friends to be welcomed in coming weeks, this is a great opportunity for our club to spread the word about what we do and to have additional hands on deck for our great service projects.

The Rotary Club of Glen Eira is delighted to induct Jan Hill as our Club President for 2010-11.

Jan became a Rotarian in 2004, and since that time has served our clubs in a number of roles and committees, including as New Generations Chair, Vocational Service Chair, Foundation Chair, and Club Secretary.

In 2007, Jan travelled to Japan with other club members to celebrate the special anniversary of our sister club, the Rotary Club of Ogaki-West.

In 2010, she was the first member of our club to complete the Rotary Leadership Institute.

Jan is a physiotherapist at Caulfield Hospital and is a passionate member of our club. She is the second female President of the Rotary Club of Glen Eira.

Rotary Theme 2010-11: Building Communities Bridging Continents

The 2010-11 RI theme reflects what Rotarians do best, says RI President-elect Ray Klinginsmith:

What is Rotary? What does a Rotary club do? These questions are often asked of Rotarians by prospective members and other interested people, and they are difficult to answer effectively in a few short minutes.

Although our primary motto Service Above Self highlights our altruistic nature, it fails to answer the two questions. Therefore, I decided to search for a briefly stated theme that would fulfill two objectives:

The first to explain the purpose of Rotary to non-Rotarians and the second to confirm and validate the importance of our principles to Rotarians. In my search for the right words, I reviewed the four Avenues of Service and noted that Club Service and Vocational Service both help us to enjoy life and to be good citizens. Community Service and Vocational Service combine to make our local communities better places for us to live and work. And International Service permits us to partner with clubs in other countries and on different continents to make the world a better place to live with an improved opportunity for world understanding, goodwill, and peace.

It is important to remember that Rotary is a “spirit of service” as well as an organization of Rotary clubs, and we need to share our core values of service, fellowship, diversity, integrity, and leadership with other people and organizations. I considered many words and phrases to capture the essence of Rotary, and the words I finally selected to describe Rotary’s current mission and to highlight our achievements are what we do best:

Building Communities – Bridging Continents

I hope you agree that these four words aptly reflect who we are, and what we do, as Rotarians. We are a unique and a premier organization — certainly one of the best in the world. We build the spirit and resources of our local communities in an important way, and we are the best in the world at linking people of goodwill around the globe and then gaining their cooperation and support to make the world a much better place to live and work. In the words of Ed Cadman, “Rotary is unity without uniformity.”

We are indeed fortunate to be Rotarians!

An Inside Story - NYSF

Dr Jenny Davey, is a Belmont (Geelong area) Rotarian, a Royce Abbey Awardee and a recent Paul Harris Fellow. She is also known as Dr Jenny Oscar, daughter of our proud charter President Geoff Oscar.

Jenny spoke about the National Youth Science Forum. NYSF is a twelve day program for students moving into Year 12 who are thinking about a career in science, engineering and technology. The flagship event of the NYSF is the January Forum. Until now this event has been held exclusively in Canberra and hosted by The Australian National University. In 2010 the NYSF is proud to announce a third session to be held in Perth and co-hosted by the Curtin University of Technology and The University of Western Australia. Rotary has been in partnership with the program since 1984 along with the Australian Government, major industry, national research institutes and universities.

The most important aspect coming from the NYSF is a network of friends, colleagues and support groups throughout Australia, which will be of value to participants for the whole of their lives.

Inspiring Futures

The NYSF helps students moving into Year 12, who wish to follow careers in science, engineering and technology by introducing them to research and researchers, by encouraging the achievement of excellence in all their undertakings, and by helping to develop their communication and interpersonal skills. It also fosters discussion of, and interest in major national and global issues and emphasises the importance of maintaining continuing active interests in sport, arts and music.

The NYSF continues after January with a series of University and Industry Seminars and afterwards as a network of people with common aims.

Dr Oscar has been a Rotarian "Mum" for a number of years at both the Canberra and Perth forums. We celebrated her attendance by having all of our club Paul Harris Fellows wear our pins and medals in her honour.

Our club was delighted to host Professor Miles Prince, Director of the Centre for Blood Cell Therapies at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Melbourne, Australia and of the Blood and Marrow Transplant Service.

The Rotary Club of Glen Eira, in conjunction with the Rotary Clubs of Chadstone-East Malvern, Frankston Sunrise, Australian Rotary Health, and not-for-profit FriendsR4, is sponsoring research into blood cancers, especially multiple myeloma.

Professor Miles Prince (some of his female patients compare him to George Clooney) spoke about his research and the differing research into the blood cancers. He also explained in plain terms the various impacts on patient, family and friends. He noted the impact goes beyond the patient. Professor Miles also noted that every part of research and discovery is About the patient. He sees his main role as being with the patient.

This night was also a cross over to Rotary Health and we also had in attendance Dr Ron Goldberg and he explained his fund raising in this area and how vital Professor Miles is to his endeavours. Bob Moran, founding President of the Myeloma Foundation was also our guest. Our special night also saw a wonderful special donation from Marc Fookes (a Past President of our Club) who was with us together with his wonderful wife, everyone’s favourite Bev Fookes.

Of interest in this research is the Rotary Foundation and it matches some of the funds raised as a grant. Professor Miles explained aspects of stem cell research, the theory of cells as “seeds” and the “soil” that surrounds these “seeds.” He answered questions as well including noting our research must confirm to world standard best research. We all look forward to placing this insidious disease into the annals of historical interest i.e. a cure is found.

It was a tremendous evening that was a further highlight of the impact people have in our lives when their focus is improving the lives of others. Our Rotary Club is proud and delighted to be part of this groundbreaking and cutting edge research.

Arts Show opens Thursday!

Our Rotarians have been active in setting up the annual Camberwell Rotary Art Show at its new venue, our local Caulfield Racecourse. With 2,500+ paintings for sale, this is a terrific showcase of Australian art.

Members of our club have been frantically hanging, categorising, and preparing the paintings for the show, assisting the Rotary Club of Camberwell. This year's event starts with a grand opening on Thursday and goes through until Sunday.

If you wish to see some great Australian artwork or want to help worthwhile Rotary projects, please come along to Caulfield Racecourse at this time.

Ladies Delight

Our club's Ladies Night was a delight for all, with the men of the club all shown up. As one Past President noted, "We can't do this too often, as they're better at it than we are!".

Joyce Binstock was President for the evening, with support from toasters Evelyn Fabian and Rena Leske. Enid Oscar and Marilyn Faiman handled the club's finances for the night, whilst Patsy Marks delivered a job talk as a Scottish Dancing Instructor. Sheryl Furman delivered a passionate presentation about her charity work for children in Africa.

All members were terrified about the prospect of Coryl Asher as Sergeant. She delivered in fine style, although there was some queries about her suggestions for what to do with certain whitegoods.

Louise Nelson was guest speaker, telling us all about the new business model for Charity Shops. Even Past President John Leske thought he might pick up some new fashion items next time he is Glenhuntly Road.

Hands-on Help for Art Show

Our club has a wonderful opportunity to raise funds for our charitable work by assisting the Rotary Club of Camberwell during their annual Art Show to be held at the Caulfield Racecourse. Camberwell Rotary requires help during and after the Art Show. The work is guaranteed not to be arduous and each session lasts between three and four hours.

We will require help from the 27^th until after closure of the show with dismantling on the 31^st of May.

We would welcome assistance from our partners, adult children, students or relations that may want to help. Our club will be remunerated for each person helping on a per session basis. Therefore the more people we can get to help the more money we will be able to raise for our club.

We firmly believe that we can raise at least as much as we did for the Business Persons’ Breakfast; so that these two events will form the basis of our annual fund-raising.

Your help is essential; the help of others that you may know would be very useful. We count on all members to give of their time during the Camberwell Rotary Art Show.

Trivia + cakes + controversy = fun + helping Bethlehem Hospital

We have raised about $4000 for Bethlehem Hospital at our Monster Trivia Night. Over 150 people attended the blockbuster at Glen Eira Town Hall, including representatives from other clubs in our Beachside Cluster, and several councillors of the City of Glen Eira, including Mayor Steven Tang.

The night was won in controversial style by the "Bethlehem Carpetbaggers" in a 3-way tie breaker question, following the five rounds. Earlier in the evening, a member of the leading table at the time (not the mayor, it must be said!) was spotted using his iPhone under the table. Their table was duly docked points and brought back to the field.

In the end, it was all for a good cause and we had lots of fun. Raffle prizes included a BlueRay DVD player from the Good Guys in Brighton, A-Reserve theatre tickets to the Melbourne Theatre Company, and dinner at the Mediterranean Greek Tavern in Elsternwick.

A Friend of the Rotary Club of Glen Eira, Fiona Beer, supported the night by baking some delicious cupcakes and cookies for auction on the night. In a great result, nearly $150 were raised from the cakes along. Thank you Fee!

Motor neurone disease (MND) is the name given to a group of diseases in which the nerve cells (neurones) controlling the muscles that enable us to move around, speak, swallow and breathe fail to work normally. With no nerves to activate them the muscles gradually weaken and waste. The patterns of weakness and rate of progression vary from person to person.

MND was first described by Jean-Martin Charcot in 1869 and there is still no known cause or cure for this devastating disease and treatment options are very limited. Effective management of the disease by a variety of specialist health professionals is vital to maintaining quality of life and assisting with symptom control.

Recent data around the incidence of mortality demonstrate an increase in the number of deaths from MND in Australia during the last decade (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare). The ageing population and interventions that improve life expectancy in MND are likely to result in a steady increase in the number of people living with MND in Australia.

Each day at least one person dies from MND and another is diagnosed
Average life expectancy is 2-3 years from diagnosis
1400 people are living with MND in Australia at any given time
973 people were registered with MND Associations as at 30 June 2009
2465 items of equipment were loaned by MND Associations in 2008/09
Over 4000 people attended MND information or education sessions in 2008/09

For every person diagnosed with MND it is estimated that a further 14 members of their family and their friends will live with MND forever. Due to the rapid progression of MND and the spiralling series of losses MND has a significant impact on the physical and emotional well being of the carer.

MND carers are a specific client group with specific needs related to training and support from diagnosis and through bereavement. Health professionals and community care providers, who may have only limited knowledge of MND, also have special needs related to information, education and support.

Until a cure or an effective treatment for MND is discovered care and research must go hand in hand.

Care based on the needs of people living with MND and their families no matter where they live in Australia or their age.

And

Research, which is adequately funded and supported, to give people living with MND today hope that a cure will one day be found.

Kristen's Haiti Help

Our Rotarians will remember Ambassadorial Scholar Kristen Radka, who spoke at our club's Youth Dinner in 2009. Prompted by the Haiti Earthquake, she raised money to travel to Haiti to help those affected by the disaster. This is her video and what she saw with her own eyes.

Now a Primary School teacher, Kristen has adopted the Rotary ethos of Service Above Self to help others.

David Smorgon spoke about the meaning of "success" at this year's successful Rotary Club of Glen Eira Business Person's Breakfast. Our club's 21st annual breakfast certainly met David Smorgon's definition of success, with over 200 in attendance, including councillors of the City of Glen Eira, Federal Member for Goldstein Andrew Robb, and others.

Mr Smorgon spoke about growing up in his family's abattoir business and working his way up from the carcass room. He also touched on the challenges of chairing a 21st century professional sports team, the Western Bulldogs and looked forward to their performance in 2010.

His own recipe for success is as follows:

1) Have a Dream – push yourself beyond the boundaries
2) Plan – and write it down
3) People – work with do-ers rather than blockers
4) Hard Work – “Success” only comes before “Work” in the dictionary
5) Back Yourself – don’t sit on the fence

Binge drinking in older adulthood

Research indicates that one in eight adults (around two million people) drink alcohol at high risk levels.

Binge drinking is not only a young person’s issue, with alcoholism affecting people of all ages, their families and communities.

An information session will be held to highlight the issue of binge drinking in older adulthood and provide knowledge and education of this increasing problem.

- What is binge drinking and how much is too much?

- What is a standard drink?

- The effects of your drinking on your family and friends; and

David is a well-known, respected and successful businessman. He spent 25 years as a senior executive and Director of Smorgon Consolidated Industries which was one of Australia's largest family companies. In 1995, the company announced a staged divestment of all of the business interests and David then established his own investment company, Generation Investments Pty Ltd.

Today, David's main business interest is as Executive Chairman of Inmatrix. Inmatrix provides solutions that enable financial institutions to make better credit decisions, develop stronger client relationships and achieve greater profitability. The insights and experiences David gained through working in the Smorgon family business led to his becoming the inaugural Chairman in 1997 of Family Business Australia, a position held for five years.

Since October 1996, David has been President of the Western Bulldogs Football Club, one of 16 clubs in the national Australian Football League. David’s commitment and dedication to his Club is widely acknowledged.

David has been a Governor of the Sony Foundation, since its inception in June 1999. Sony Foundation assists the youth of Australia and has distributed over $2 million.

David was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in June 2000 for services to the Western Bulldogs Football Club and to the community through health, education and social welfare organisations. In 2008, David accepted the role of Ambassador for Ochre – supporting Indigenous health through art for the Menzies School of Health Research – Australia’s leading research organization in indigenous health and tropical diseases.

David was recently inducted into the Brighton Grammar School Inaugural Hall of Fame for his contribution to business philanthropy and sport. He has three sons; all married and has six grandchildren.

The Rotary Club of Glen Eira is delighted to assist the Rotary Club of Camberwell with this great community event. History of the Camberwell Rotary Art Show

The first Art Show and Competition was held in 1966 at the Camberwell Grammar School having been preceded by two Antique and Art Shows.

The aim of the Art Show has always been to:

Raise money for the charitable use of the Rotary Club
Provide a venue for artists to display their works
Provide a community artistic event

The 1966 Show featured 1042 artworks. One of the principal objectives was the acquisition of artworks as a basis for a collection for the City of Camberwell (now City of Boroondara) and its citizens.

By 1990, over 50 artworks had been donated to the City of Camberwell and Rotary International awarded its first district ‘Significant Achievement Award’ to the Rotary Club of Camberwell.

In 1969, the Show moved its location and featured in the official launch of the new Camberwell Town Hall. Free entry to the Art Show was sponsored by the City of Camberwell. The exhibition featured 1357 works.

By 1972, the Show boasted over 2,000 entries.

The Study Grant Prize was instituted in 1972. David Taylor, whose works are now well renowned, was the first winner.

The Art Show’s entries peaked at over 4,000 in 1983.

In 1993, Melbourne businessman, arts benefactor and philanthropist Harold Mitchell became Patron of the Camberwell Rotary Art Show.

Art Show judges have included Sir William Dargie, Paul Fitzgerald, Harold Freeman, Karlis Mednis, Herman Pekel, Robert Wade, David Taylor, Ern Trembath, Kath Ballard, Colin Johnson, Carole Milton, Gillian Peebles and two international judges, Ian Houston and Richard Stone.

A number of prize winning artists and judges have contributed raffle and door prizes to assist in fundraising.

In recent years, the Art Show has been attracting some 10,000 visitors annually.

In 1999 Australia’s highest selling newspaper, the Herald Sun, became the Camberwell Rotary Art Show’s major sponsor. This followed the demise of the Herald Sun Outdoor Art Show which was a feature of Melbourne’s Moomba celebrations.

The City of Boroondara (formerly City of Camberwell) has supported the Art Show since its inception.

The success of the Art Show can be attributed to many corporate sponsors, Club members plus a legion of friends who volunteer their time to ensure it remains a premier event on Melbourne’s art calendar. In excess of $2.1 million has been raised for local, national and international humanitarian and charitable projects.

Due to impending renovations at the Art Show’s traditional venue, the Camberwell Centre, the 2010 Camberwell Rotary Art Show is moving to the one of Melbourne’s best known exhibition venues, the Caulfield Racecourse.

Youth Exchange update from France

France

in January. Here are excerpts from her first report:

I've been in France for about a month and already I have learnt so much. I'm finding it difficult to understand some conversations but other times I can understand what people are talking about.

I haven't done much in my time in France. (!!!! ed.)

My first weekend in

France

was a Rotary camp where I met all the other exchange students. It's great because now I know people for all over the world. I spent my few weeks just sitting in class trying to understand what the teachers say, but most of the time I’m drawing in my note book. My friends find my drawing interesting.

At home with my first host family my host sister, host brother and I cook crêpes. They taste pretty good with a splash of rum in them and with Nutella. The French are crazy about the stuff. I got my parents to send up some Vegemite and I shared it with my host family, my host sister loved it my host brother wasn’t sure, and my host parents don’t really like it.

I also went skiing for the day with my host family - it was great. I wasn’t as good as my host sister but she has been skiing since she was little and I’ve only been skiing for 3 maybe 4 years.

My councillor is pretty cool she took me to Paris for 5 days. It was out of this world it’s really pretty. I visited the Eiffel Tower and all the other places that you are meant to see.

I've been shopping; spent a lot of money but so worth it. Other than that I haven’t really done much beside hang out with my friends and with the other exchange students.

I really love

this country is amazing. It has stopped snowing but its still raining, also the whether is heating up the other day it was 12° yep I know heat wave, it’s great.

I miss home and I've been dying for a vegemite sandwich with cheese. But I left my vegemite at my first host family's house and they don’t get back for another 4 days.

Great news from New Jersey, USA, where our club's former Ambassadorial Scholar Scott Doty and beautiful wife Ashley have a new baby girl.

Scott reports:

Her name is Alejaya Josephine Doty (pronounced 'Ah-lay-jhay-ah'), and she was born at 6:46pm on Tuesday night (Mardi Gras baby-- New Orleans celebrated her birth all night!). At birth she was 8lbs 14oz and 21.5" long. Her first name means "a victorious woman, a helper & defender of man"; her middle name means "God will add" and is in honor of Ashley's grandmother. We will be calling her "Ale" (pronounced Latino-style, "Ah-lay").

We wish mother, baby and father well - Ale is a welcome new addition to our Rotary family!

The windows of Temple Beth Israel

Our members were treated to a personal tour of Temple Beth Israel by recently retired Executive Director Alan Samuel. The Temple was founded on 8 August, 1930, as the Beth Israel Congregation by Mrs Ada Phillips. Temple Beth Israel is now the largest congregation in Australia, with more than 2,750 members, and the mother congregation of a family of like-minded synagogues that stretch from the Indian Ocean to the South Pacific.

Alan gave a detailed explanation and tour of the fabulous glass windows in the main sanctuary. Hand made by local Victorian glass artist David Wright, these series of windows show creationism, special Jewish holidays and other spiritual meanings. As a long time director at the Temple, Alan was able to explain the background of how they were made, hung, and the special meaning given to each individual glass panel.

Orr Stakes Day

Our club was invited by the Melbourne Racing Club to participate in the Orr Stakes Day, the traditional family day at Caulfield Racecourse. Our members arrived early to set up our BBQ to sell tasty sausages to the racegoing families.

The sun shined brightly as we fed hundreds. Some of our Rotarians and their families enjoyed some spare time in the bouncy castle and on the pony rides. Others just enjoyed the sights and sounds of Caulfield Racecourse.

We displayed a ShelterBox to highlight an international Rotary project. We raised just under $1000 on the day.

Disaster fundraising for Haiti

At the special Australia Day races at Caulfield Racecourse, our Rotarians were out in force raising money for disaster relief and ShelterBox. Our aim is to buy as many ShelterBoxes as our fundraising can muster to help in places around the world affected by natural disaster, such as Haiti. On Australia Day, we raised over $1800 - enough funds for one and a half boxes.

ShelterBoxes for Haiti

Tens of thousands dead, even more left homeless and scenes of chaos; this is the picture coming out of the Caribbean island of Haiti.

The catastrophe continues to unfold and international disaster relief charity ShelterBox are working round the clock to ensure emergency shelter reaches the island as quickly as possible. Reports from Haiti say thousands of people have been sleeping in the open air for the second night running, with some people even being forced to sleep among dead bodies.

With such a pressing need for emergency shelter provision, ShelterBox is dispatching 1500 ShelterBoxes with even more to be packed before the end of the week. ShelterBox is using all of the resources available to make sure immediate aid reaches Haiti. Boxes are being shipped direct from ShelterBox HQ, from prepositioned stock in Curacao and from El Salvador.

A three-person ShelterBox Response Team comprised of highly-experienced members David Eby (US), Wayne Robinson (US) and Mark Pearson (UK) are doing all they can to make it to Haiti as quickly as possible. Alongside this, the dedicated team of volunteers at ShelterBox HQ in the UK are giving up their time to help pack the ShelterBoxes ready for transportation.

ShelterBox Founder Tom Henderson said: ‘Our team around the world are doing all they can to ensure aid reaches the people of Haiti as soon as possible. With each day the need grows and we’re doing all we can to get help to the thousands of families affected by this tragedy.

‘The response from our volunteers and supporters has once again been sensational. We can’t do this without the public’s compassion and generosity.’

Trivial meeting

Each year, Rotary Clubs in our beachside area get together for our annual Trivia Night. As the reigning cup-holders, we will be hosting next year's Trivia Night in the new year.

In the meantime, we had some rigorous practice by holding our own internal club Trivia Night amongst members and friends of our club. It was a great night of fellowship, and a reminder why we enjoy Rotary.

The questions, asked by co-quiz masters Geoff Oscar and Jeff Nirens, bamboozled most. We now know that Winston Churchill was born in a toilet, that the Rotary Club of Chicago's second ever project was to donate a horse to a local doctor, and that "racecar" is a palindrome.

The winning team, the "Black Russians", consisted of Jan Hill, David Heuberger, Larry Blode, Garry Fabian, and Adrian Nelson. They knew that honey doesn't spoil and that "SAR" is not an acronym for "Sex and Rotary".

We recognise that some people don’t have the time or commitment to be a member of a Rotary Club but still want to help others. People have busy lives and busy schedules, but would still like to be involved and help where they can. By being a Friend of the Rotary Club of Glen Eira, you can use your time and talents to help others but not be restricted by the obligations of being a Rotarian. Your family can also join in our activities.

This is a way for you to contribute to the community and to make a difference. Help at a Garden Working Bee at a local hospital, assist with Race Day Sausage Sizzles at Caulfield Racecourse to raise funds for local projects, or help us with the global eradication of polio.

Cricket Legends Lunch

Members of the Rotary Club of Glen Eira attended today's Cricket Legends Lunch at the MCG. This is the 10th annual Cricket Legends Lunch raising funds for Yooralla. The lunch directly supports people with disabilities, their carers and families through Yooralla's Respite Services.

This year's guest speakers were Sir Richard Hadlee and Kerry O'Keefe. Sir Richard is arguably New Zealand's greatest ever cricketer. He was 1982 Wisden Cricketer of the Year and was knighted for services to cricket in 1990.

Kerry O'Keefe was an Australian leg-spin bowler who knows provides a unique insight to cricket as a commentator. He entertained us all with hilarious stories and gave his own quirky perceptions and pertinent observations of the game of cricket.

To a young set of parents in Afghanistan, it was a life-saving immunization for their five-month-old son. To a woman with seven children in Malaysia, it was a loan to start a sewing business that enabled her to feed her children. To North Koreans, it was an ambulance that equipped a hospital to be able to take care of them. To thousands of college students in almost every country on earth, it was the chance to study abroad, with all expenses paid, and learn their educational specialty up close and personal.

Ask anyone who has been touched by The Rotary Foundation what it is and every answer will be different. Ask anyone who has been touched by The Rotary Foundation just how important it is, and every answer will be identical.

The Rotary Foundation was born as an endowment fund in 1917, the brainchild of RI President Arch C. Klumph. It was reborn 12 years later in the form we know today, The Rotary Foundation of Rotary international. However, it wouldn’t be until after the passing of Paul P. Harris in 1947 that TRF would reach the financial health and world importance that it enjoys today.

Technically speaking, it is a not-for-profit corporation that supports the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programs. It is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world.

Its expenses are born solely by the interest earned on its contributions over a three year period.

As an endowment fund for Rotary "to do good in the world," its initial contribution was US$26.50 in 1918. When it became The Rotary Foundation in 1928, it had a value of US$5,739.07. In the most recent year that we have complete figures, the Foundation had more than US$73 million contributed in 2000-01. But, that’s not what The Rotary Foundation is all about. Its event-filled 85 years has been a story of Rotarians learning the value of service to humanity, and the citizens of the earth benefiting from that service.

The Humanitarian Programs of the foundation help fuel international Rotary projects to improve the quality of life, providing health care, clean water, food, education, and other essential needs primarily in the developing world.

The Rotary Club of Glen Eira works hard at raising funds for the Rotary Foundation to continue the magnificent humanitarian works done across the globe.

November is Rotary Foundation Month

In November each year, the Rotary Club of Glen Eira recognises and celebrates the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. The Rotary Foundation supports the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programs. It is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world.

One of the educational programs is the World Peace Fellows Program.

Each year, up to 100 Rotary World Peace Fellowships (50 master’s degree fellowships and 50 professional development certificate fellowships) are offered on a competitive basis at six Rotary Centers, which operate in partnership with seven leading universities (centers offer master’s degree unless noted otherwise):

Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand (professional development center)
Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA
International Christian University, Tokyo, Japan
Universidad del Salvador, Buenos Aires, Argentina
University of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England
